Charles White
Knowledge Management Specialist
Office of the Chief Engineer and
Office of the Chief Knowledge Officer

Charles White currently is JPL’s Knowledge Management Specialist for the Office of the Chief Engineer and works directly for the Chief Knowledge Officer.

Mr. White is a sitting member on the JPL Lesson Learned Committee as an author and investigator to lesson learned documents and selected case studies.

His career at JPL began in 1987 and he has worked on numerous space missions directly and indirectly through institutional support program offices. He has brought information technology changes to the institution including the first web policies, the current ‘JPL domain’, and email system migrations.

He has used innovative (and sometimes controversial) technology to explore unique solutions like the computer game Second Life to bring outreach, and facility design. The current real-world Earth Science Center in JPL Building 264 was designed, modeled and virtually demonstrated in Second Life as well as the Mechanical Design Center, and the Astrobiology Collaboration Center. Charles has received numerous awards for his innovative initiatives.

Charles began his Knowledge Management career change in 2007 as the Cognizant Engineer and Software Product Lead for the spacecraft Problem Reporting System (PRS); a web-based application used to track all spacecraft anomalies and emergencies that are in space, on the launch pad, or under development. The PRS is a critical part of the mishap investigation process and it is also a key component of the NASA Lessons Learned system.

By special request of the Department of Defense, he was assigned special duty as a knowledge management advisor to the U.S. Air Force Space Missile Command to help the Independent Readiness Review Team (IRRT) create a controlled process for all Air Force launch approvals. Additionally, he aided the U.S. Navy Mine Warfare Data Model Working Group where he developed the Navy’s first Mine Warfare Taxonomy.

Charles promotes JPL missions to school children and programs as he himself was inspired as a student to work at JPL by Carl Sagan. He eventually met Dr. Sagan at JPL and they sat together on the JPL mall for a 90 minute face to face chat.

In his off-work time, Charles is an active member of the Los Angeles League of Arts and he promotes joining science and art together through a private group known as the Desert Wizards of Mars.
