David Oberhettinger Manager
Engineer Standards Office
David Oberhettinger supports the Office of the Chief Engineer in its mission to "achieve engineering excellence" in meeting the technical challenges posed by interplanetary exploration by leading three activities:
Prior to JPL employment, he managed the Spacecraft Engineering Technology Department at Northrop Grumman. In addition to his Northrop Grumman department management duties, he performed engineering analysis tasks for 18 years as a member of the Reliability Technology Group within the JPL Reliability Engineering Office. Specific Northrop Grumman technical tasks during this period included serving as the risk manager on development of a Northrop Grumman spacecraft design employing onboard nuclear power and ion propulsion for a mission to Jupiter.
During two years prior to this period, he managed the Northrop Grumman office providing safety, reliability, quality assurance, and environmental test support services to NASA Ames Research Center. Earlier work involved engineering consulting for the Office of Naval Aviation and the Department of Energy.
He presently serves as a vice-chair of the annual international Reliability & Maintainability Symposium (www.rams.org) and on an AIAA Committee on Standards.
